While the Kylie Cosmetics founder has not responded to the comments, some have speculated that she may have chosen the fake grass as an option to conserve water, given Southern California’s dry climate.
“Fake grass does reduce water use via watering. However, it also is a synthetic product produced from plastic and therefore is likely to have a fossil fuel origin,” said Benjamin Blonder, associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley, in an email to Bored Panda.
“Fake grass also contributes microplastics to the environment. It becomes hot in the summer and supports no life.”

“If you want a garden and you are concerned about water, plant a water-smart garden with plants that can cope with drier conditions, start to be water wise in your home and adjust to the hotter drier conditions. Don’t make the mistake of turning your garden into a plastic desert,” Sebastian Pfautsch, professor of Urban Planning and Management at Western Sydney University, told Bored Panda.
“It is no service to declining biodiversity and your kids will burn their bare feet. And by the way, it is pretty unhygienic too if you have pets/wildlife around.
“And I haven’t even mentioned the weeds that will come through which need to be managed, and you’re back in a hot garden labouring to make it look nice. There are many alternatives to this material.”
Blonder suggests using alternative materials for low-water landscaping instead of artificial grass, such as gravel or drought-tolerant plants like certain types of succulents. “These alternatives provide important habitat/resources for other species and contribute to soil and environmental health.”
