BBC Radio 2 listeners were in for a surprise when Rylan Clark, the popular

host, had to pull out of his Saturday show due to a sudden health issue.

The 36-year-old presenter was struck down with a cold over the weekend, leaving him unable to make his much-anticipated appearance.

But in his absence, former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Richie Anderson stepped in to fill his shoes, much to the delight of fans.

Richie, who was already on standby for such an occasion, took to the airwaves with Sally Boazman to deliver the Saturday show.

Richie quickly addressed the situation, telling listeners: “The reason I’m in is because Rylan’s got the sniffles, apparently.”

However, his comment was met with some skepticism from the audience.

A number of listeners jokingly suggested that Rylan might not be sick at all but instead enjoying a holiday in Cornwall.

The light-hearted speculation started when some fans sent in their observations, claiming to have spotted Rylan out and about during the week. One listener, Kate from St Ives, wrote in saying, “I saw Rylan on a nudist beach in Cornwall.

And his teeth aren’t the only thing that’s massive. He also has very large feet.” Another fan added that they had seen him trying to wash cars while stopped at traffic lights in Conwy.

Despite the playful banter, Rylan responded on Instagram, commenting “Lies” on the video and thanking his fans for their well-wishes.

He made light of the situation and confirmed that he was indeed under the weather but appreciated the humor from his listeners.

While fans missed hearing Rylan’s signature voice on Saturday morning, they expressed their enjoyment of Richie’s hosting skills. The comments flooded in, with many praising Richie’s natural presence and energy.

One fan wrote: “Radio 2, come on now, give Richie his own show! He’s fab! Would have been great in the weekend morning slots or weekday afternoons.”

Another listener added: “Was a brilliant show today. Well done Richie—miss you at breakfast. Sally, fab as always. Same time next week?”

Richie’s presence on the show had fans reminiscing about his time on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show. Richie, who was a regular on the breakfast show until December 2022, had announced his departure shortly after Zoe Ball revealed her decision to leave the morning slot. Reflecting on his six years on the breakfast show, Richie expressed his gratitude for the experience.

He said, “It has been so much fun, and I have loved every single second of it. It has been amazing to come here and be accepted by you, Zoe, Tina, and the producers.”

Richie has since moved on to present the travel news on weekday afternoons for BBC Radio 2. His smooth delivery and infectious energy continue to win over fans, and many believe he has the potential to take on a bigger role in the future.

Back to the situation with Rylan, while the fans were disappointed not to hear his familiar voice on the airwaves that Saturday, they were more than satisfied with Richie’s performance.

It seems that the listeners have embraced Richie as a stand-in and are hoping for more of him in the future.

As for Rylan, he’s likely to be back on air soon, but in the meantime, his fans are keeping the humor alive by continuing to joke about his alleged “holiday” in Cornwall.

Hopefully, Rylan will be feeling better soon and back to entertaining his dedicated audience with his witty charm and engaging personality.

In the meantime, Richie has certainly shown he’s up to the challenge and could easily find himself in the spotlight once more, much to the excitement of BBC Radio 2 listeners.
